Are Christians not Supposed to Judge?

Often people will quote Matthew 7, when they say don't judge. The Bible does not say, don’t judge at all. Jesus was saying, don’t be a hypocrite and judge someone for the same sin you are doing. When you fix your issue, then you will be qualified to judge fairly.

Matthew 7:5, You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

Judgements are a part of everyday life. God shows us how to judge righteously. He says you will know a Christian and false prophet by their fruits (Matthew 7:20). He gives us clear indications on how to recognize someone who is saved, and those who are not saved. To do that requires one to analyze and make a judgment.

He tells us if we see our fellow brother sinning to rebuke him, which some people would consider judgmental. You need to do it with kindness of course (Galatians 6:1). Luke 17:3, Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. See also 1 Timothy 5:20, Titus 1:13, & Matthew 18:15-17.

There’s a book in the Bible called Judges. Why would God appoint judges if we are forbidden to judge? Judges 2:16, Then the Lord raised up judges.

God says we will judge the world and angels (fallen angels I presume). 1 Corinthians 6:2-3, Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

I’m not saying to be over judgmental or critical, but judgement is good, beneficial, and sometimes necessary if done correctly. I certainly hope you have good judgement and are not void of all judgement.

John 7:24, Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.

Leviticus 19:15, “You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.

Christians are to hold each other to a higher standard and keep each other on the right path.
1 Corinthians 5:12, For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?
